Entry Thirty-Four
After Dimmesdale and Hester touch each other to make sure 1. they are alive and 2. that their old connection still exists, they walk to
"(sit) down on the heap of moss where she and Pearl had before been sitting."This is the first inication of Pearl being left aside. Now it is not Hester and Pearl, but Hester and Arthur. They are going to exclude her from their relationship because he simply replaces her. Of course, Pearl does not like this. Later, a physical boundary appears: The brook. So Hawthorne lets her feel her loneliness in two ways.
